How to REALLY show your kids you love them – 5 Love Languages

love languages

Have you ever wondered “do my kids know I love them”? Or questioned if you are doing a good job parenting? I know as a mom of four I ask those questions daily. And to tell you the truth I think those questions are totally normal and valid. However, the real question really is “how do I SHOW my kids that I do truly love them?”

Everyone shows and receives love differently. To insure that your kids not only hear the words “I love you” but also sincerely feel the love you must first learn how your kids receive love. To figure this out, begin by looking at what makes your kids genuinely happy. How do they tell YOU that they love you? That will be the first clue as to your child’s LOVE LANGUAGE.

There are 5 different love languages in total: Touch, Words, Quality Time, Gifts and Service. Each love language comes with it’s own unique way of sharing and receiving love. Once you figure out what your child’s love language is you can begin showing them love in a way that will impact them forever.

5 love languages (Touch, Words, Quality Time, Gifts, Service)

Touch: Your child wants/needs high fives, cuddles, kisses, hugs, holding your hand. With this child you will want to make sure to hug them daily, hold their hand while walking through the store, snuggle up to read together, and show them that you also enjoy cuddle time (no matter what their age).

Words of Affirmation: Loves it when you tell them good job, asks if you love them, wants to hear only the positive and their feelings are hurt when they hear correction. With this child you will want to tell them you love them daily, tell them how proud you are of them regularly, find reasons to congratulate and encourage them, try to avoid harmful words and tones in your voice as those will only hurt their hearts to the soul.

Quality Time: Tries to get your undivided attention, loves to spend time next to you doing anything or nothing at all. With this child find ways to spend quality time together, bike riding, going on walks, cooking together, reading to each other and so forth.

Gifts: Loves birthday gifts, surprises, earning rewards, asks for treasure hunts or special gifts for rewards. With this child it can be even the small simple gifts that tell them “I love you”, a note with a little trinket, an extra candy in their lunch box, a new piece of clothing for a special occasion and so on.

Service: Enjoys when others help with tasks, likes to “serve” others, likes to organize, would rather help others than play or do non meaningful tasks. With this child you can show them you love them by cleaning their room for them, helping them with their homework, teaching them something new, volunteering together and more.
