Ham Bone Soup Recipe
I don’t mean to brag…but this Ham Bone Soup recipe is the bomb diggity! No joke! It’s amazing! I buy and cook ham all Fall and Winter long just to use the ham hock to make ham bone soup! Even better this comfort food/soup is super easy to make! You can throw it together in the crockpot or slow cook it on the stove top in a dutch oven!
My husband and kids beg me for this soup as soon as the weather starts to get cold.
It does have a few steps that can take a little bit of time if you want to make it homemade from scratch. However, this recipe can be easily be simplified and turned into a crockpot recipe. For starters, you can replace the 2 cups of raw northern beans with 2 cans of northern beans. Now that you do not have to cook the beans first, you can throw all of the ingredients into the crockpot and let it slow cook all day.
Helpful Tips:
- Make sure you rinse your beans before adding them to your soup.
- Let your ham bone cook in the crockpot all day, when you are about ready to eat your soup, remove the bone and cut off any remaining meat and add it to the soup.
- Top your soup with some fresh herbs like parsley or basil for additional flavor.
- For an added richness in flavor, saute your carrots, onions and celery in a saute pan with 2-3 TBSP of butter.
Ingredients:
- 1 ham bone, with some meat still on it
- 1 cup ham, chopped
- 3 cans chicken broth
- 3 cups water
- 2 cups northern white beans
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 stalks of celery, chopped
- 3 large carrots, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 large sweet potatoes, chopped
- Salt and pepper
- 2 tbsp butter
Directions:
- In a large pot or dutch oven pour 3 cans of chicken broth, 1 cup water and beans. Bring to a boil, then turn off heat and let sit for 1 hour.
- Turn to low heat and place ham bone into the pot with the beans. Add 1-2 cups water and simmer for another 2 hours.
- Cut sweet potatoes into 1 inch bite size pieces. Place a separate pot and bring to a boil. Cook for 3-5 minutes. (Long enough to soften potatoes but not fully cooked). Strain water and set aside.
- Saute onions, garlic, carrots, celery and sweet potatoes in butter with salt and pepper.
- Remove ham bone from the pot and scrape off any remaining ham. Chop ham and place in the saute pan with veggies. Saute for about 1 minute, then combine all ingredients into the large pot with the beans.
- Add 1 more cup water or chicken broth at this time if needed. Let cook for at least another hour.
- Serve hot and delicious!
***You can also do this recipe in the crockpot! Just follow the instructions above and instead of cooking it all in a dutch oven or pot…put it all in the crockpot to cook for 5-6 hours!
