Sonic Shake Up The Competition Challenge Review

It’s shake time! Sonic recently asked me to participate in the Sonic Shake Up The Competition Challenge. They are on a mission to make their milk shakes the best on the market. Even better they wanted me to test out a few different fast food chain milk shakes against theirs and give them a completely honest review. So of course how could I deny such an awesome opportunity to indulge in several milkshakes guilt free!

First of all let me tell you I am PICKY when it comes to milkshakes. I am one of those people that if it doesn’t not taste just right I won’t eat it. And if there is a better place to get a shake I will drive the distance! With that said I gladly took this challenge and I took it very seriously!

FLAVOR VARIETY

So when comparing Sonic’s 25+ milk shake choices to McDonald’s 3…that was a no brainer. Sonic Wins! I was only able to choose between chocolate, strawberry and vanilla at McDonald’s. I really don’t like any of those flavors so I went ahead and just chose a chocolate shake. While visiting Sonic there were so many flavors and add on’s I could choose from I was overwhelmed with ideas. I went for my favorite Chocolate Banana!

PRESENTATION

Both milkshakes came with whipped cream and a cherry on top. McDonald’s milkshake came in a clear cup. Sonic’s came in a Styrofoam cup. Because the McDonald’s milkshake came in a cute little clear cup the milkshake melted quickly making the presentation very quickly go from cute to yuck! So even though Sonic’s cup was not as cute in the long run it created a better shake, because of course Styrofoam is a insulator.

TASTE

First I tried the McDonald’s milkshake – and no joke I took one sip and I was done! It was way too sweet for me. As for my Sonic shake I was astonished by how yummy it really was! The sweetness was right now. The only thing I did not like about my Sonic shake was the whip cream. It was way to thick and fake tasting for me.

TEXTURE

When I ordered both shakes I asked for them to be made as thick as possible, as I really only enjoy a super thick shake. When I received my McDonald’s shake it was very thin and soup right of the get-go. YUCK! I was truly surprised by the Sonic shake. I am kind of weird but I like my shakes to be too thick to drink from the straw – and it was exactly that! This was a shock to me as I have not had a Sonic shake in over a year and the last time I had one it was too thin for me and I did not like it at all. Sonic has definitely stepped up to the plate and improved their shakes! So again Sonic wins!

MELT FACTOR

First let’s just say that my Sonic shake made it all the way from the restaurant to my home (about a 15 min drive) without melting AT ALL! It stayed nice and thick the entire ride home. I would like to be able to tell you how long it took for my Sonic milkshake to melt and get soupy – but I can’t because it was totally devoured before that ever happened. As for my McDonald’s shake it was melted and soupy by the time the attendant handed my the cup at the drive-thru. So basically I never even had a milkshake, more of a super sweet nasty chocolate milk.

Final Thoughts

Ok so my final thoughts…I definitely vote Sonic over McDonald’s! There really was no contest. However if I were to give a criticism to Sonic I would request they change the whipped cream they are currently using. (PS. I absolutely love whipped cream…I just don’t like Sonic’s)!
