Ultimate French Dip Recipe
I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love this sandwich! Honestly I am not even a sandwich person – but this sandwich is the bomb! It was really pretty simple to make and costs just a fraction of what you would pay at a restaurant. However, I have to be honest I have paid $15+ for a French Dip at a restaurant and nothing has ever compared to this amazing Ultimate French Dip! Even better we paid less than $5 total in ingredients for 2 large French Dips (which really could have fed 4 people).
Ingredients
- 1 baguette
- 1/2 lb cold cut Roast Beef
- 4-5 slices Swiss Cheese
- 1 packet au jus mix (only use 1 1/2 cups water or beef broth)
- 1/2 onion, sliced
- 1 tsp white sugar
- Salt and Pepper
- Butter or Olive Oil
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Slice your baguette in half lengthwise. Butter (or drizzle olive oil) each piece of bread and layout on a cookie sheet to bake in the oven for 5 minutes or until golden.
- Slice onion into bite size pieces.
- Heat a saute pan and add butter or olive oil. Add onions to preheated pan and saute until nearly transparent. Add salt, pepper and sugar and finish sauteing until fully transparent and caramelized.
- Add 1 1/2 cups water (or beef broth) to a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Add 1 full packet of au jus mix and stir until well mixed.
- Add cold cut Roast Beef to au jus to and let warm in sauce for 3-5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove Roast Beef from sauce and place on toasted baguette.
- Now comes the fun part, top the Roast Beef with the caramelized onions and Swiss Cheese. Place the open faced sandwich back into the oven to melt cheese for approximately 3 minutes.
- Top sandwich with the top piece of baguette bread, serve with a ramekan of au jus and enjoy!
