Growing up both my husband and I had the same family tradition of cooking a family meal from a recipe book starting around age 10. My parents were restaurant owners and amazing cooks. So cooking was something that our family was always passionate about. When I turned 10 years old my parents decided it was time that I learn how to read a recipe book and pick a meal to cook for the family dinner. What an experience!

I would start with selecting one of the hundreds of recipe books on the bookshelf. Then I found a recipe that looked yummy and easy enough for me to cook (even as a 10 year old). Once my recipe/meal was “approved” by my parents I would write up an ingredients list (or shopping list) and go shopping with my mom for the ingredients needed. Finally the fun part. With the supervision of my parents I got to cut, cook and prepare the meal myself. I felt such accomplishment! Even today I have found that I am one of the few mom’s/wife’s out there comfortable in the kitchen cooking and preparing meals from scratch.

We recently explained this tradition to all four of our kids and of course our 10 year old realized it was now her turn to continue the family tradition.  She has spent several years “helping” mommy cook in the kitchen and learning several tips.  But now it her turn to officially continue on the family tradition. She is so ecstatic and I am super excited to teach her I want my kids to grow up feeling confident in the kitchen!

Tonight was my oldest daughter Nyomi’s first time finding a recipe, writing up the “shopping” list and preparing the meal. She started with something easy…spaghetti from my own Campbell Family recipe book. She did an awesome job! We have a fabulous little cook on our hands! She even finished the meal off with brownies for dessert she made herself!
