Copycat Honey Baked Ham
One of my most favorite holiday dishes has always been a Honey Baked Ham. The only problem is they are so darn expensive. We are a family of 8 so we need a pretty large ham to feed our family size. To buy a ham from the Honey Baked store would cost us about $100! That’s a 300% mark up from my cost of a ham purchased from Costco. The even crazier part is the fact that making a Honey Baked Ham with the amazing crunchy glaze is actually really easy to make!
There are a couple of ways to get the sweet crunchy glaze on you ham. You can warm up your ham in a crockpot for 4-5 hours or you can put your ham covered in the oven for 1-2 hours. Either way will give you equal results, it just depends on your preference and size of your ham. I usually buy a 12+ lb ham so mine really don’t fit in my crockpot and I end up having to put them in my oven.
Also keep in mind that the traditional way to serve a ham is cold, however many people prefer their hams to be warm. I usually serve mine nice and warm, however I personally prefer the left overs the next day when I can pick off my ham at refrigerator temperature.
My last hint is if you want to make your glaze/crust super easy you can use the spiced glaze packet that comes with the ham from Costco! Seriously, if you use the packet – making your Copycat Honey Baked Ham becomes the absolute easiest recipe ever!
Copycat Honey Baked Ham
Once you try this honey crusted ham you will never want ham another way! Mouth watering, sweet, savory, crunchy, moist - your palette will be on 7th heaven!
Ingredients
- 8-12 lb Bone-in spiral ham
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground clove
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp ginger
Instructions
1. Pat ham dry, trying to remove excess water that will prevent honey from sticking. Remove plastic pieces from ham.
2. Place the ham in the crockpot (or oven safe roasting pan to cook in the oven).
3. Pour and massage the honey all over the ham, making sure to get honey inside the slices some.
4. Cover and cook on med-high heat in the crockpot for approximately 4 hours (2 hours on 325 degrees Fahrenheit in the oven).
5. Pre-heat oven to broil. Remove ham and place on a baking sheet.
6. In a small bowl, mix together dry ingredients. Pat mixture all over the ham, pressing it onto the already sticky honey coating.
7. Place on the middle rack of the oven and broil for 4-5 min or until caramelized.
8. Remove ham from the oven and let rest for 5-10 minutes. Be very careful as the sugar glaze will be very hot!
Hints and Tips:
- Pat ham dry to remove any excess water. This will help the honey and glaze adhere better.
- Buy a Costco ham and use the glaze packet that comes with it instead of having to buy and mix all of the individual dry ingredients. If using the Costco glaze packet all you will need to do is add the white and brown sugars and cinnamon. Mix and pack onto your ham before broiling.
- Adjust the oven rack to the lower position in the oven. Line a roasting pan with heavy duty foil. Position ham flat side down in center of pan.
- Make sure to keep a CLOSE EYE on your ham when it’s in the broiler. Check it frequently! Once the sugar is bubbly and caramelized remove.
- The sugar will be EXTREMELY HOT! Be patient and do not touch the glaze until it cools down.
- Ham is traditionally served cold. This ham is great served both warm or cold, it’s just a matter of preference. I absolutely love it as left over, served cold the next day.
- Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes per pound.
