5 Ways to Sweeten Savings on Halloween Costumes
Halloween is always a fun time of the year where the kids have so much fun picking out costumes to dress up in. However, it seems costumes just keep getting more and more expensive. As a mom of four kids, I have learned that as much fun as it is to go shopping and haunt down that favorite Halloween costume, it’s just not affordable. There are several ways to find that costume that will create those fabulous memories without becoming a seasonal zombie and spending an arm and a leg!
Get Crazy Creative
Some of my kids favorite costumes have been the ones we made ourselves. Simply checkout some fun ideas on Pinterest or at the local craft stores and get crafting. Last year my kids all had DIY costumes and they turned out great! The best part is the since of success when the costume all comes together and you get that since of accomplishment. A few DIY ideas could be tule tutu dresses for your little ballerina, suede moccasins and fringe to create the perfect little Indian look, create a friendly little bat with a black mask and felt covered cardboard wings. Honestly the options are limitless and so much fun to make!
Shocking Second Hand Savings.
Make sure to give thrift stores a good look. In the past I have found thrift stores and consignment shops to be a terrific place to find inexpensive quality costumes. Many thrift stores receive brand new discontinued costumes from the years previous and sell than for more than 75% off the original price. Also I have found consignment shops to be a fantastic place to find very gently used costumes or even professional theater costumes for cheap. So make sure to check out a few local stores and see if you can save a little extra this Halloween.
Terrific Trick or Treat Trading
As parents we all know other families with kids similar ages as our own. Trading costumes from year to year has become a favorite way for us to save on costumes. Before going out and paying full price for a costume that will likely be worn just one time for a few hours – ask a few friends if they have any costumes that they may want to swap with you. You may be surprised by the options your current friends already have! Plus you can help them out by sharing your old and used costumes as well.
Garage Sale Gargoyle Gander
Keep your eyes peeled for costumes and accessories at garage sales throughout the year. The nice thing about shopping at garage sales for costumes is you can search all year long. Plus if you are like me it’s always fun to barter a little to get the price down a little extra!
Sweeten the Savings with online coupons.
Starting in October each year stores will begin to announce coupon savings and promo codes. One of my favorites is BuyCostumes.com – often offers sales for up to 25% off all costumes and with free shipping options!
