DIY LEGO Alphabet and Sight Word Blocks

lego sight words

Do you have some of those large Mega Blok or Lego’s just laying around your house not getting played with anymore? I know I did – and I just couldn’t stand letting them just sit there anymore, so I decided to re-purpose them and now I am so glad I did! Now these plain old blocks have gone from drab to fab, from dull to full of fun! Not only do they look like a “new” toy to my kids they are the perfect educational tool, creating a whole new level of playing.

I have noticed my two year old is enjoying these alphabet Mega Bloks more now that they have a little extra character and my first grader is able to use them to help her create new words! Even better, I have been noticing my 6 year old helping my 2 year old learn his letter names and sounds!!! Oh how it melts my heart to see my kids working and learning together!

Directions

  • Using your Silhouette program, write the entire alphabet in font IMPACT size 116. Print letters onto the black vinyl.
  • Using a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol, clean the sides of each block.
  • Transfer alphabet letters to blocks.
  • If you want sight words as well, using the same font and size print desired sight words. A few suggestions: HERE, PLAY, HER, HIM, WITH, TO, YOU, WITH, AT, THE, MOM, DAD, JUMP, CAT, DAD, CAN…)

***If you are planning on putting words on both sides of the blocks, I recommend putting like words on both sides of the block. For instance make a few noun blocks (him, her, mom, dad), verb blocks (jump, play) and so on.
