How To Make Moving Less Stressful + Printable Moving Checklist!

moving post

Man moving and simply suck. Sorry but it’s the truth. I don’t know anyone who enjoys moving, whether it’s across town or across country, the work it takes to move seems astronomical. Well we just recently moved into a new house, and only 3 years ago we moved across country, a few years before that we moved out of state….and well a few little moves in between. Needless to say I have done my share of moving and have come up with a few very helpful tips.

The first tip I have for you is to print of this “Moving ChecklistHERE. This checklist was created after learning from both the good and bad experiences of moving.

Now let’s talk a little about some of the items on this list. First you will see that for two week before your actual move date I recommend packing. That’s right, diligently pack at least 2 boxes a day! Not only should you pack 2 boxes a day but you should also plan on posting 2 items on Craigslist/Consignment/Garage Sale or other sale group of some sort. You should also try and trash or donate at least 2 items a day. By following this 2 x 2 x 2 you will be slowly eliminating a large amount of clutter that you do not need on a daily bases or even to move with you to your new home. When I move I usually like a fresh start and new look in my home. For instance, for the past several years our house has had a modern look. All black furniture, sleek streamline decor and lots of browns. I chose to sell pretty much ALL of our furniture and big decor pieces on Craigslist and used that money to buy all “new” shabby country chic decor. Not only was it awesome to get new furniture and decor; it also made moving so much easier! We were able to move tons less furniture and have all of our new furniture delivered directly to our home!

When it comes time to put in a change of address with the Post Office, I recommend getting that done early. You can actually fill out the change of address form a 1-2 weeks early and set a date for the official forwarding to begin. If you turn this form in at least a week before your official move-in date you can eliminate the delay and confusion of having your mail forwarded. I also recommend if you receive any packages via UPS or Fed EX you make sure to have those mailed directly to your new home. If you have anything set for an auto delivery make sure to give plenty of time to have the new address changed, because Fed Ex and UPS will not forward your packages, they will simply send them back.
